A very rare and local species in Belgium, not so often recorded.

Wingspan 18–23 mm. A generally not distinctly marked species but the edges of a dorsal patch are often present.
Generally a dark species with dark hindwings. It requires genitalia dissection to separate it from poorly marked specimens of Epinotia brunnichana, Epinotia solandriana and Epinotia caprana.
The caterpillar is whitish with more or less visible brown warts. The head and neck shield are dark or light brown and there is a dark spot in front of the anal valve.
In early instars in a rolled and puckered leaf, usually those on a terminal shoot. Later on it spins a leaf into a pod. Pupation in the ground in a strong brown cocoon.
They are active from dusk and fly low down amongst the trees and later come to light.
The adults are on the wing in late summer and fly from August till the end of October.
The larva lives on Alnus glutinosa.
It inhabits damp habitats, river margins, lake sides, embankments and marshy habitats.
