A new species for Belgium in 2016 in LX.
The occurrence of this species in our country is confirmed by DNA barcoding.
Native
Wingspan 12–17 mm. General appearance of Epinotia cinereana is monochromatic grey and it is little variable unlike Epinotia nisella. The forewing has a light greyish ground color with darker greyish pollination and almost blackish grey drawing. The black-grey basal field is angularly defined. Along the inner edge of the forewing there is a narrow light grey stripe, which can continue to widen towards the tornus.
In Epinotia nisella the basal field is more uniformly black-grey, without a light band along the inner edge, or the basal field is not noticeable due to a general darkening of the forewing.
Determination by genitalia examination required.
The larvae feed between spun leaves and pupate on the ground. The adults come to light.
Adults fly from early June towards early August.
The monophagous larva lives on Populus tremula.
