Imago

Wingspan 12–15 mm. A very distinctive species with wings yellowish brown to orange or red with a conspicuous, white, semitriangular costal patch.

Caterpillar

Last instar larvae are yellowish to pale green. The head is light brown/reddish brown with black posterior shading. The prothoracic shield is black/dark brown with black posterolateral margins. An anal comb is present.

Bionomics

The larva spins several leaves together from which it feeds on the surrounding leaves or from a web at the underside of a leaf. Hibernates as an egg. Pupation in the larval shelter.
Easely disturbed from its resting place during the day, but quickly returning to cover. They are active from dusk onwards and come to light and sugar.

The adults fly in one generation, usually from mid-June till late August.
