Imago

Wingspan 12–19 mm. This is one of several species of Endothenia in which the adults closely resemble each other, and require dissection of the genitalia for accurate identification.

Caterpillar

The larva resembles Endothenia marginana, with minor differences:
Head brown ochre colored; later instars are dark brown, almost black.
Thoracic legs are yellowish brown and translucent; later instars have golden brown legs.
Anal segment with no anal comb. Anal plate is translucent yellowish green with a few grey spots on the anterior; later instars also no anal comb and the anal plate is translucent brown with darker spots on the anterior.

Bionomics

The larva lives in the pitch of a seadhead. It hibernates full-fed in the feeding place, and pupates there in a cocoon of silk and particles of pith.
They fly usually in the vicinity of teasel and are mainly active at night and come very rarely to light.


Flight periods

The adults fly from May to early August, probably in two overlapping generations.
