Wingspan 18–23 mm. The species has noticeable raised blackish scale tufts on the forewing.and roughened scales on the costa.

It feeds from a loose spinning from between needles. The adults hibernate.

The adults fly in one generation from August onwards till late October/November and after hibernation again from mid-March till May.
