This very rare species has not been seen in Belgium for quite some time, until it was rediscovered back in LG in 2020, where there are several stable populations now.

This species is considered Regionally Extinct according to the IUCN Red List category for Flanders 2023.

Bionomics

The nocturnal larva hibernates and is mature in May/June.

The adults fly from mid-July till late August.

Host plant (species):
Calluna vulgaris, Vaccinium myrtillus and Vaccinium uliginosum

The larvae feed on low-growing shrubs, most often dwarf shrubs of the family Ericaceae like Vaccinium uliginosum, V. myrtillus, Calluna vulgaris.

Habitat

It inhabits especially bogs and their degadation stages, dwarf shrub heathland and open humid woodlands with Vaccinium as undergrowth. The larval habitats are more located in semi-shadow with higher-growing dwarf shrubs.
