Imago

Wingspan 13–16 mm. The males are generally broader-winged than the females, and show a rather more marked distinction between the outer and inner halves of the forewing.

Caterpillar

Light to dark dirty green, the head is reddish brown, the anal plate is yellow, spotted black all around, the small plates are small, black, the neck plate is not distinguished.

Bionomics

The larva feeds from May to July on the lower leaves, or on the ground in tubular webs or in a pod-shaped leaf, also in spun flower heads.
Pupates in a long elongate white shelter in the larval feeding place.
The males flying during the day, and the females from dusk onwards and both sexes come to light.

Flight periods

The adults fly in one generation from late June till end of August.

The larva feeds on Lotus, Plantago, Scabiosa, Knautia, Rumex, Potentilla, Vaccinium and probably many others, also on trees like Populus tremula, Abies etc.

Habitat

It is usually found in wild uncultivated places, bogs, acid heaths, forest meadows of swampy and marshy ground and limestone outcrops.
