Wingspan 15–20 mm. Obvious are the long, narrow, black forewing with black dots and with raised dark scales. Hindwings grey.

Caterpillar

The larva can best be searched in June–early July.

Bionomics

The larva mines at first in mainly Erica sp. Later it lives in a silken gallery amongst the leaves of Erica or Calluna vulgaris, close to the ground, and mainly feeds in mosses of the genus Cladonia.
The adults become active from late afternoon and later come to light.
