A very rare species in Belgium, only known from LI, rediscovered again in 2021 after a long absence.

Wingspan 9–13 mm. One of the smallest and brightest-coloured Aethes species. The conspicuous fasciate ruby red markings, which contrast with the deep yellow ground colour of the forewing, are characteristic

Caterpillar

The yellowish white larva with head and pronotum light brown, can be found from September to early June.

Cocoon/pupa

In a slight cocoon, covered with debris among the needles.


Bionomics

The larvae feed in a slight web, first mining a number of needles out from the base, copious frass remains suspended in silk threads between the needles. Hibernation in a silken tube against a shoot, after hibernation the larvae feed by hollowing out the needles from the concave upper side and living free in a spinning between the leaves.
The adults come to light.


Flight periods

The adults can be seen from late May till late July.
