Imago

Wingspan 10–15 mm. Forewing dark fuscous with golden yellow irroration on the distal three-quarters of the forewing, a transverse medio-dorsal stria extending to the costa and a weakly marked ocellus which may show small black spots. The dark hindwings have prominent white cilia.

Specimens in nature


Caterpillar

A pale yellow to white larva with a light or dark-brown head. The prothoracic shield is light brown with darker posterolateral shading.


Bionomics

The larva lives in the cone, tunnelling from one seed to the other by way of the cone axis. Pupation inside the cone.
The adults are active in afternoon sunshine round the tops of the trees and later come to light.


Flight periods

The adults have been observed usually from late April till late June.
