Wingspan 12–16 mm. Brown-grey forewings with abundant reddish-brown scales. Light crossband in the middle of the wing and one from the rear corner, both of which are quite diffuse. It has a remarkable rusty red head.

Bionomics

Hibernates as an egg. Larvae initially hidden by the bud scales, later in a web on the needles. Pupation in a cocoon on the ground.
The adults come to light.
