A very rare and local species in Belgium, not seen for a long time but recently (2019) discovered again in LG. Hitherto only known from one location.

Distribution


Imago

Wingspan male 11–18mm, female 10–14mm. The males are usually marked with little contrast, the females are slightly smaller and marked with high contrast.

Caterpillar

The caterpillar is greyish-white with brown dots, the head and neck shield are brown, the latter has dark edges at the back, the anal valve is dark brown.

Bionomics

The first generation feeds on the developing seeds in the flower head and bore into the stems, the later generation larvae feed on young leaves at the base of the plant and overwinter fully fed in a stout cocoon in the soil.

Flight periods

The adults fly in two generations and have been seen from mid-April towards late July.
