The eggs are laid in batches of 30-50 on the upper leaf surface and the young caterpillars hibernate. In spring they live in a rolled leaf.
Pupation takes places in this roll or between spun leaves.
They are active in the dusk and come to light.
The adults fly from the end of May till late September, occasionally till well into October in two generations a year.
The polyphagous larva lives on Salix caprea, Betula, Fagus, Quercus, Tilia, Ulmus, Pirus malus, Rhamnus frangula, Sorbus torminalis, Fraxinus, Anchusa, Vaccinium myrtillus, Lysimachia and also on Malus domestica, Pyrus communis, Crataegus sp., Rosa sp., Betula pendula, Lonicera xylosteum and Ligustrum vulgare etc...
