Imago

Wingspan 9–13 mm. A very distinctive species, having large orange blotches on a darker greyish brown forewing. One on the dorsum and one centrally in the wing, thus showing three large blotches on the moth when it is seen from above.

Caterpillar

The larva is dirty white, the head and neck shield are black-brown to black, the latter somewhat duller, the anal valve is brown.


Bionomics

The larva spins two or more seeds of the host plant together and lives within. It hibernates full-fed from October in a cocoon spin in the soil and pupates in spring in that cocoon.
They are active in sunshine and visiting Umbelliferae flowers and later occasionally come to light.


Flight periods

The adults have been seen from late May towards early September.
