Wingspan 19–22 mm. A distinctive species with sooty black forewings and a broad white antemedian cross-line and an indistinct wavy postmedian line.

Bionomics
The larvae live between spun leaves. The adults are usually present high up in the trees but they come to light.

The adults fly from mid-May till August, occasionally later. Most observations during June.

It inhabits old, mature woodland and parkland.
