Imago

Wingspan 25–28 mm. Pyla fusca differs from Ortholepis betulae in, among other things, the slightly narrower wing cut and the lack of the upright scale patch in the forewing.

Bionomics

The larva lives between silk on and between the leaves on the food plant. the adults have a habit of resting amongst areas of burnt heath, where their coloration makes for excellent camouflage, although they are easily disturbed. The adults come to light.

The larva lives mainly on Erica, Calluna, but has also been recorded on Vaccinium myrtillus, Salix and Betula.
