A very rare and local species in Belgium, only known from an old record in Heverlee (VB) and rediscovered in 2019 in LI.

Wingspan 12–18 mm. Gray pointed forewings with darker grey-brown crossbands. Brown-orange drawing in the outer part of the forewing. Head rust red, thorax and palps grey.

Caterpillar

Fully grown larva about 9 mm. Body is waxy yellowish-brown with very small dark brown pinacula. Head is blackish-brown and prothoracic plate brown. Anal plate is weakly sclerotized and yellowish-brown with some darker mottling.

Bionomics

Newly hatched larva feeds on new shoots and spin webs around the needle bases. After initially feeding externally the larva lives from August till March in the buds of the food plant. Later it prefers fresh shoots of the same tree.
Pupation between leaf litter on the ground. The species hibernates in the larval stage.
The adults come to light.
