A rare but widespread species throughout Belgium, mainly observed in the northern part.

Wingspan 12–14 mm. An obscurely marked tortrix. The head and forewings are a dark fuscous marked with black. There are vague whitish costal marks and some plumbeous scales. A dorsal blotch is irregular white mixed fuscous but tends to show a double structure. An ocellus is evident with black dashes.
The larva feeds probably within the catkins of the host plant.The adults are active in early morning and in late afternoon and evening sunshine and come to light.
The adults fly from mid-April till early July with a peak during May.
Little is know about the food plant, but it is believed to feed on Betula.
It inhabits suitable localities where the food plant occurs.
