Clypeus
Description:The anterior sclerite of the dorsal head, lying below the frons, and to which the labrum is articulated anteriorly. The body of the clypeus consists of a median portion located between a pair of lateral portions. The clypeus is separated from the frons by an epistomal sulcus called the frontoclypeal sulcus or the posterior clypeal margin (= posterior clypeal border). Lateral clypeal portions are separated from the genae (= cheeks) by the subgenal sulcus. One or more longitudinal carinae (= clypeal carinae) may be present on the median portion of the clypeus. Similarly, one or more teeth (= clypeal teeth) may be present. The clypeus may be very reduced in some ant taxa.
