Metapleural gland

Description:

In most ants, the paired exocrine gland present on the metapleuron, which secretes antibiotic substances active against fungi and bacteria. Its orifice is usually situated in the posteroventral corner of the side of the alitrunk, above the level of the metacoxa and below the propodeal spiracle. The bulla of the metapleural gland is often more conspicious than the metapleural gland's orifice.
