Wingspan 19–22 mm. A distinctive species with sooty black forewings and a broad white antemedian cross-line and an indistinct wavy postmedian line.

Bionomics
The larvae live between spun leaves. The adults are usually present high up in the trees but they come to light.

Flight periods
The adults fly from mid-May to August, occasionally earlier or later. Most observations were made during June.
Habitat
It inhabits old, mature woodland and parkland.
