This website provides online distribution maps for saproxylic beetles species occurring in Belgium. These maps are based on data preserved in the collections of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS – IRSNB - KBIN) or housed in a large number of private collections. The project aims to bring together the dormant distribution data residing in Belgian collections.

The maps are build for more than 330 species belonging to 14 families and based on more than 28,000 records obtained after digitisation of about 80,000 saproxylic beetle specimens from Belgium. The records concern specimens deposited in collections and verified observations, no bibliographic data has been taken in account. The current distribution maps will be continuously updated on a regular basis after treatment of new records and information.

The list of species involved in each family is also furnished. For the names of genera and species used in this website, we decided to follow the Catalogue of Palearctic Coleoptera edited by Löbl & Smetana. This is a comprehensive work in 8 volumes covering the about 100,000 species of Coleoptera known to occur in the Palaearctic Region and providing primary taxonomic information of all available names on the genus and species levels (see references).

We are grateful for any corrections or additional information, please refer to us.
